Day Two: Bing

Bing! Bing! Bingbingbing!

Number 2 waited with his heart playing a cha-cha in his chest. His hands gripped the wheel, that useless wheel, the one they added for show in the Globe Car, and no one in Big Hit ever dared to ask.

Bing! Bing! Bing! Bingbingbingbing!

He could hear Number 1 racking up the points. Blast! He’s probably talk about nothing else at the bar afterward. Number 1. First in his class, of course. Number 1 in the 357th Game Generation since their world had began. How could a lowly 2 ever hope to match up? And Number 2 had come from a long line of 2’s. Every ancestor had come second. Had been chosen second to go into the globe car, grip the wheel, then go soaring into The Game when you least expected it. There had been training, oh yes, but never really enough for a 2…

Bingbingbingbing!
Thwack! Thwack!
Bingbing!
Thwack!

The great thunder of the Paddle Buttons only added to the cacophony.
Well, he’d give it his best. Even as a 2. He’d stay out there and run the whole Board as long as he could and rack up the points. He’d do it for his father.

THUNK.

Number 2’s heart dropped at the sound of it. Number 1 had exited the game! And he had only gone 10 seconds! A new low…
“Now is my chance,” thought Number 2.
The sound of a spring in tension filled his Globe Car. He knew he had only a breath before—

TWACK!

And he was sailing up along the entry lane, tumbling over and over and over again. The ball rounded the curve and immediately struck 1, no two, NO 3 Glow Poles
Bing! Bingbing!
And then the hits came fast and furious! He bounced, and ricochet, spun around, nearly fell through the exit gate and then was saved at the last minute by the left thwacker and sent back to the top of the Board.

Bing!Bingbing! Bingbingbingbing!

Never had a 2 racked up so many points!
His time on the Board was over before he knew it, but his heart swelled with pride. He had set a new record for 2’s! He had gone 30 seconds! He removed his helmet and pushed open the door to the dazzle of light and the mingling of congratulations. Number 1 stood at the forefront.
“Guess I owe you a beer.”
